We are an official congregation of The Satanic Temple. The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice, and undertake noble pursuits.
We provide the opportunity to meet with other freethinkers, Satanists and secular activists in the state of Iowa. We are an Iowa nonprofit religious organization with a goal to facilitate the communication and mobilization of politically aware Satanists, secularists, and advocates for true religious freedom. We are a nontheistic religion and do not believe in a literal Satan; rather to us he is a potent symbol of rebellion against religious tyranny.
Group activities include meeting kindred spirits, learning about and discussing Satanic philosophy and activism, enjoying social occasions together, ritual events, and taking political action for common goals. We encourage local Satanists, freethinkers, atheists, humanists, witches, secularists and others who share our belief in the Seven Tenets to join us and explore Satanic philosophy and activism.
The Seven Tenets, while inspired by 18th Century enlightenment values, were designed for current times, to assist the modern Satanist in noble undertakings. Knowledge is a cornerstone of our Satanic philosophy, and it is incumbent on members to expand their horizons.
One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.
The Satanic Temple Iowa encompasses the entire state of Iowa and the quad cities area. Most of our members are on the eastern side of the state, but we have members all over. We do not have a physical location. We meet in public places such as coffee shops, libraries, book stores, parks, etc. In addition to face-to-face meetups, we also host online events through Zoom.
Satanism is a non-theistic religion that focuses on compassion, empathy, reason, and bodily autonomy. We follow the Seven Fundamental Tenets of the Satanic Temple. We do not believe in supernatural entities, including a literal Satan. Instead, we use the literary character Satan as an emblem of rebellion against tyranny.
Each member has a different answer to this. The universal answer is: Satan has meaning to us and we are unwilling to decenter Satan in our sincerely held religious beliefs.
No! We are animal lovers and many of us are vegetarian or vegan. Mistreatment of animals goes completely against the First and Third Tenets. Animal sacrifice has never been a practice in non-theistic Satanism. Even the Church of Satan has an explicit rule about not harming animals except as food.
This is something that has been in active discussion. However, we do not have a plan to open a school at this time.
If you are a parent with a child in public school and wish to see equal representation, please contact us.
Members (i.e. Congregants) must go through a vetting process and sign a nondisclosure agreement. Congregant status is voted on by the Leadership Council. To be considered, you must show frequent attendance at meetings and social gatherings. To get started, check out our public events and speak with a Minister of Satan to express your interest. We will NEVER cold message you through social media to apply for membership--be on the lookout scammers.
Membership is and always will be free. We accept donations and run fundraisers. We occasionally sell tickets to ritual events, however we allow free entry to volunteers who help with the event.
Please note: there is no age requirement for joining the national organization, but we require Congregants to be 18-years or older. Teenagers (13+) may attend public events with parental consent if the venue allows.
This is a scam. We will never ask you for money through social media.
